Policy Principles
Provide Real-Time Usage and Price Data
- Providing customers real-time water usage information empowers them not only to conserve water but also save money.
- However, without Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), customer consumption and billing information is always at least 30-days behind.
- If California wants to get serious about the drought and water conservation, we need to bring water meters into the 21st century so that customers have the tools to make usage decisions in real time.
- Any investment made will pay off in the long-term with billions of gallons more water saved.
ACTION:
Cal Water recommends the state encourage all water suppliers to implement AMI. Cal Water will also pursue CPUC approval of a utility-wide rollout of AMI.
